WELCOME TO THE SCIOTO VALLEY BIRD AND NATURE CLUB

BE SURE TO CHECK OUT THE WHAT'S NEW PAGE TO SEE THE RECENT ADDITIONS AND UPDATES

The SVBNC is centered in Chillicothe, Ohio, and most of our activities are centered here in Ross County and the surrounding counties. This a very rich biological area and the home of the Hopewell Culture that lived here two thousand years ago. The entire area is dotted with their mounds. The Scioto River, one of the main tributaries of the Ohio River runs through the entire area.

Our Club was formed in 1990 by eight people who met while birding. After several years of rather informal meetings and get-together's, we formally organized, now have around seventy members including birders, entomlogists, botanists, and photographers. We have regular meetings at Hopewell Culture National Historical Park with speakers from all areas of natural history.

Our goals are Education, Conservation, and Research. Various members frequently give talks about Butterfly Gardening, Attracting Birds with Tree and Shrub Planting, Butterfly and Moth Identification, Bird Identification, Wildflower Identification, and Tree Identification. The Club conducts Spring Birdwalks at Hopewell Culture NHP that are well attended by the public.

Several members are engaged in making biological surveys of plants, birds, insects, and other biota at various points in the Chillicothe, Ohio area. Some of the surveys have been continued for over fifteen years and much important data have been collected. Since our beginning, we have participated in Christmas Counts at Beaver Valley in Pike Co., OH, Rocky Fork Lake in Highland Co., OH, and Kingston in Pickaway Co. OH.

Three Bird Banding locations are in operation at Ross Lake, Buzzard's Roost and Hopeton Mound Area, a part of Hopewell Culture NHP. One of the most exciting banding projects is the banding of the Northern Saw-whet Owl, which before this time had not been known to migrate through this area. We have recently received our Non-profit 501(c) status.

We meet the fourth Monday of each month at Hopewell Culture NHP, and everyone is very welcome to attend. Nature lovers of all ages and degrees of experience will find something of interest. No questions are ever too simple to ask, and in most cases there will be someone who will have the answer.
